Al-Asr ('Time'), 3 Meccan verses, is among the shortest surahs and, for many, the most concentrated: swearing by time, it declares humanity in loss except those who believe, do righteous deeds, and 'counsel one another to truth and counsel one another to patience' (103:3). The imam al-Shafii is quoted saying that if people pondered only this surah it would suffice them.
Al-Asr's three verses are reported in a saying attributed to the early jurist Imam al-Shafii to be sufficient, were people to reflect on them alone, without any other portion of the Quran, a saying frequently repeated in later Islamic teaching to underscore the surah's exceptional density despite its brevity, though the historical chain attributing the remark to al-Shafii himself is treated by some later scholars with the same caution given to many popular sayings of famous early jurists.
Companions of the Prophet are also reported in early accounts not to part from one another without reciting this surah aloud together, a custom cited as evidence of its early and widespread use as a communal closing formula. Al-Asr's three-part ethical formula, faith, righteous deeds, and mutual counsel toward truth and patience, is read by classical commentators as deliberately moving from the individual (belief and action) to the communal (counselling one another), so that the surah's final word is not personal righteousness alone but a shared responsibility for encouraging it in others, a structure later Islamic ethical writing cited when discussing the obligation of mutual moral accountability within a community rather than salvation understood as a purely private matter.
