Two Theologians in Different Cities Found Sunni Kalam's Two Schools

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Abu Mansur al-Maturidi was a ninth and tenth century theologian of Samarkand in Transoxiana, working within the Hanafi legal tradition, who founded what became known as Maturidi theology, one of the two major schools of Sunni kalam alongside Ash'ari theology, founded by his near contemporary al-Ash'ari working independently in Basra and Baghdad.

The two schools, developed apart from one another, reached broadly similar conclusions on most doctrinal questions, both affirming divine attributes as real without specifying the manner in which they exist. Al-Maturidi's theology became the standard kalam school specifically of the Hanafi legal tradition, spreading with Hanafi law across Central Asia, the Ottoman lands and South Asia as those regions adopted Hanafi jurisprudence.

That pairing with a specific legal school, rather than diffusion on doctrinal grounds alone, shaped how widely Maturidi theology spread: wherever Hanafi law took root, Maturidi theology generally traveled with it. Alongside Ash'ari theology, it remains one of the two schools most Sunni Muslims historically identify with when asked their theological affiliation, a duopoly formed by two theologians working in different cities on a shared set of questions without any recorded contact between them.
