Al-Shafi'i studied under Malik ibn Anas before travelling to Iraq and Egypt, a documented path across three of early Islam's major centers of legal learning rather than a career confined to a single school or a single city's own local tradition. That geographic range across Medina, Iraq and Egypt is documented as part of how his own eventual synthesis drew on more than one region's legal reasoning rather than extending only the teaching he had first received from Malik.
Out of that traveled synthesis he founded the Shafi'i school, the third of the four Sunni madhhabs to take lasting shape, historically dominant across Egypt, the Levant and Southeast Asia. Founding a school that would outgrow the single teacher's lineage he began under is documented as a distinct achievement from simply transmitting Malik's own teaching intact to a new generation of students in a new place.
