The Perseverance of the Saints, Confessed

The Baptist Faith and Message, the Southern Baptist Convention's confessional statement in its 2000 revision, states the doctrine under the heading God's Purpose of Grace: all true believers endure to the end, and those God has accepted in Christ and sanctified by his Spirit will never fall away from the state of grace but shall persevere to the end. The statement allows that believers may fall into sin through neglect and temptation, grieving the Spirit and bringing reproach on the cause of Christ, without treating any single failure as proof the person was never truly saved in the first place. What secures the outcome, on this reading, is not the believer's own steadiness but God's own keeping power, which is why some Baptist theologians prefer to call the doctrine the perseverance of God rather than the perseverance of the saints, since the emphasis falls on who does the keeping rather than on the human being kept. The wording traces back through the Second London Confession of 1689, which stated the same guarantee for those effectually called and sanctified by the Spirit and given the precious faith of the elect, showing the doctrine as a confessional constant across more than three centuries of Baptist statements of faith rather than a recent addition to them.
