Babur founded the Mughal Empire in 1526 after his victory at the First Battle of Panipat, beginning more than three centuries of Muslim imperial rule across North India. The empire that followed consolidated a vast, wealthy realm governed through a Persianised imperial culture rather than through narrow religious identity, balancing and pacifying local societies by drawing its ruling elites from diverse backgrounds rather than from one community alone.
By the seventeenth century the Mughal state had become the largest economy in the world, larger than Qing China or western Europe, with Islam established as the religion of its ruling elite across the whole of North India. This establishment is distinct from the earlier, more localised spread of Islam through Chishti Sufi missionary work already recorded for the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, since Babur's conquest and the imperial state it founded established Islam at the level of governance across an entire subcontinent's north rather than through scattered missionary communities.
What this changed for Islam's spread was the creation of a single vast imperial structure in which Islam held ruling status across North India for more than three centuries, resting on Persianised administration and a genuinely diverse elite rather than on uniform conversion of the population it governed. The economic power the empire reached by the seventeenth century measured how completely that structure had taken hold.
