Jesus Survived the Crucifixion

Ahmadis affirm that Jesus did not die on the cross but survived it in a swoon, recovered, and later travelled east, dying a natural death of old age; a tradition in the community identifies his tomb in Srinagar, Kashmir. This reading departs from the mainstream Muslim view, that God raised Jesus to himself and another was made to resemble him (a common interpretation of Quran 4:157), and from the Christian affirmation of a real death and bodily resurrection. For Ahmadis the point is essential, since it clears the way for Ghulam Ahmad to come in the spirit of the Messiah rather than for Jesus to return in person. Ghulam Ahmad set out the theory at length in his book Jesus in India (Masih Hindustan Mein, 1899), drawing on old local traditions about a sage called Yuz Asaf said to be buried at the Roza Bal shrine in Srinagar, whom he identified with Jesus.

The identification is not accepted outside the Ahmadiyya community: mainstream historians treat the Yuz Asaf legend as an unrelated local tradition with no demonstrated connection to first-century Judea, and the shrine's own Kashmiri Muslim custodians and the wider Muslim and Christian scholarly community reject the claim, so that the theory remains a distinctively Ahmadi reading rather than one with independent historical support.
