A Prophecy That Failed in 1844 Became a Church by 1863

The Seventh day Adventist Church exists because a specific prophecy failed. William Miller had predicted Christ's return for 1844, and when the date passed without incident, an event Millerite believers came to call the Great Disappointment, most followers abandoned the movement entirely. A remnant led by Ellen G. White, her husband James White and Joseph Bates reinterpreted the failed date rather than discarding it, concluding Miller had correctly calculated a heavenly event rather than an earthly one, and around that reinterpretation they built a new theology centered on Saturday Sabbath observance and a still imminent Second Coming. The group formally organized as the Seventh day Adventist Church in Battle Creek in 1863, and the church's health reform mission there, run under John Harvey Kellogg at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, led directly and almost accidentally to Kellogg's invention of corn flakes with his brother Will Keith Kellogg, a religiously motivated dietary experiment that became a national breakfast cereal industry after the church itself relocated its headquarters to Washington, D.C. in 1903.

Dutch Reformed immigrants founded a very different kind of religious community the same general era, settling Holland, Michigan in 1847 and building Hope College and Western Theological Seminary into one of the most concentrated Dutch Reformed communities outside the Netherlands itself. No single tradition dominates Michigan today, Nothing in Particular leading at twenty two percent of adults per Pew's 2023-24 study.
