Distinct From the Turkic Sky Gods

Although grouped for the purposes of this atlas under the broad umbrella of Siberian Shamanism alongside Turkic and Mongolic figures such as Tengri, Erlik and Ulgen, Numi-Torum belongs to a linguistically and culturally distinct tradition: the Khanty and Mansi are Ob-Ugric peoples, related to the Hungarians within the wider Uralic language family, not Turkic or Mongolic, and their sky-god theology, while structurally comparable to the Turkic pattern of a remote sky father paired with an earth mother figure, developed independently within its own Western Siberian cultural context rather than descending from a shared Turkic source. Numi-Torum's pairing with Kaltash-Ekwa, the Ob-Ugric earth and mother goddess, mirrors the broader Inner Asian pattern of sky father and earth mother found among the Turkic Tengri and Umay, a structural resemblance ethnographers of Siberian religion read as evidence of a widespread, independently arising cosmological template across the region's many distinct peoples rather than proof of a single shared origin for all of them.
