Three Non State Bodies Whose Work Still Touches Religion

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

International Body gathers three organizations whose members are not states, distinguishing them from the atlas's intergovernmental grouping, though each still operates internationally on matters that touch religion.

UNESCO, a UN specialized agency founded in 1945 to build peace through education, science and culture, holds a religiously neutral but concrete role: the 1972 World Heritage Convention and the 2003 Intangible Cultural Heritage Convention give it formal standing to recognise sacred sites, pilgrimage landscapes and living ritual practices across every tradition the atlas covers, without UNESCO itself holding any religious position on them.

The International Committee of the Red Cross is a private Swiss humanitarian body founded in 1863 by Henry Dunant, holding a unique legal mandate as guardian of the Geneva Conventions, whose protections extend explicitly to religion in wartime, guaranteeing captured persons free exercise of religion and protecting religious personnel and objects from attack. Amnesty International, founded in London in 1961 by Peter Benenson out of a newspaper appeal on behalf of two imprisoned students, has carried freedom of religion in its mandate from the start, and its documentation of prisoners of conscience is among the most widely cited human rights sourcing on religious persecution worldwide.

What separates this node from Intergovernmental Organization is membership rather than mission: all three touch religious freedom, heritage or persecution directly, but none is composed of states.
