Choosing the Five Today, and Who Has Been Left Out

In ordinary practice today, the five who serve as Panj Pyare for a given initiation or procession are chosen locally by a gurdwara or organising committee from among amritdhari Sikhs in good standing, generally on their commitment and standing in the community rather than through any centrally administered process, so a given panel of five can vary considerably between one gurdwara and the next and between one occasion and another.

Despite the founding story's own emphasis on caste being set aside at Vaisakhi in 1699, whether women can serve among the Panj Pyare has been a live and only partially resolved question in practice: women have served at some initiations and processions, but many major and highly visible ceremonies, particularly at the most prominent historical gurdwaras, have in practice selected men only, and Sikh voices calling for consistent inclusion of women point to the office's own founding logic, that authority belongs to the collective rather than any excluded category of person, as the strongest argument against continuing to exclude them.

Sikh tradition preserves the names and origins of the original five: Daya Ram, a khatri from Lahore; Dharam Das, a jat farmer from Delhi; Himmat Rai, a water-carrier from Jagannath Puri; Mohkam Chand, a washerman from Dwarka; and Sahib Chand, a barber from Bidar, a deliberately wide geographic and occupational spread the tradition treats as significant: five men who had never met before that day, drawn from opposite corners of the subcontinent and castes ranging from relatively high to among the most socially marginalised, standing together as the first body in which the Khalsa's rejection of caste distinction was enacted rather than merely announced.
