Calculating The Qibla across History
Determining the qibla accurately from a distant city was a serious scientific problem in the medieval Islamic world, and it drove real advances in mathematical geography and astronomy. Early Muslim communities outside Arabia often relied on approximate methods, orienting toward the cardinal direction associated with Mecca from a given region rather than a precisely computed bearing, which is one reason some of the oldest surviving mosques show qibla walls that modern calculation reveals to be off by a significant margin. From roughly the ninth century, Muslim astronomers and mathematicians developed increasingly rigorous spherical trigonometric methods to compute the qibla for any location, producing tables and instruments specifically for the purpose, and treatises on the qibla problem form a distinct genre within medieval Islamic scientific literature.
Modern mosques calculate the qibla using great-circle geographic methods and satellite positioning, which sometimes correct older approximations; a well known modern instance is that many mosques far from Mecca face a direction that looks unintuitive on a flat world map but is the true shortest path along the curve of the earth, a distinction that has itself become a point of public explanation in communities encountering the calculation for the first time.
