Why the Elect Could Not Farm Their Own Food

Manichaean cosmology held that particles of divine light were scattered through the material world at creation and were trapped nowhere more densely than in plants, so that every act of harvesting, cutting or crushing a living plant injured the light imprisoned in it. An Elect member was forbidden to farm, pick fruit or prepare food for that reason, since doing so directly would have made a person of the highest grade personally responsible for the injury. The Hearers existed to absorb that responsibility instead. They grew and gathered food and carried it to the Elect, whose act of eating it, rather than the Hearers' act of growing it, was understood as the one moment in the chain that actually freed the trapped light and returned it toward its origin, digestion reimagined as liberation rather than as ordinary bodily process. The arrangement gave the Hearers a religious function built into an act most people had to perform daily regardless of belief, feeding another person, and meant that the harm the Elect could not commit was committed on their behalf by people whose own path to the higher grade ran precisely through performing that service well and often, across many lifetimes if necessary. The doctrine explains a division of labour that would otherwise look merely social as a working solution to a genuine theological problem.
