History is read as a decline in three periods, from an age in which the teaching, the practice and the attainment are all present, through one in which attainment has gone, to a final age in which only the teaching remains as words. Japanese calculations placed the beginning of the last age in the eleventh century, and the schools founded in the following two hundred years are all answering the question of what practice remains possible once it has begun. The doctrine is shared and the answers given to it are not.

Three Ages of the Dharma
Buddhist historiography in East Asia divides the centuries after the Buddha's death into three successive ages, distinguished by what survives of his teaching. In the first, the age of the true law, the teaching, the practice that puts it into effect and the attainment it leads to are all present together. In the second, the age of the copied law, the teaching and the practice continue but genuine attainment has become rare or absent. In the third and final age, mappo, the age of the decline of the dharma, only the teaching itself remains, as words that can be recited and studied but no longer reliably practiced toward liberation. Japanese calculations, working from a traditional date for the Buddha's death, placed the beginning of mappo in the middle of the eleventh century, meaning that by the Kamakura period the age had already fully arrived. The doctrine gave a shared historical framework to Buddhist thinkers who otherwise disagreed sharply, since it described a common problem, a world in which the old paths to enlightenment were understood to no longer function as they once had, without by itself prescribing any single solution. Some sutras attach specific lengths to each period, commonly five hundred years for the age of the true law and a thousand years each for the ages that follow it, though Japanese calculators treated these figures loosely enough to place mappo's own arrival in different centuries depending on which starting date was used.
What Practice Remains Possible
Accepting that the age of mappo had arrived did not tell a Kamakura era teacher what to do about it, and the schools that answered the question became some of the most influential in Japanese Buddhism. Honen and his student Shinran, whose teaching became the Pure Land and Jodo Shinshu traditions, concluded that self powered practice, the disciplined meditation and precept keeping of earlier centuries, could no longer reach its goal in a degenerate age, and that the only reliable path left was calling on the vow of the Buddha Amida through recitation of his name, a practice open to anyone regardless of learning or moral achievement. Nichiren reached a different answer to the same premise. Rather than turning away from self effort, he held that the Lotus Sutra alone remained fully effective in the degenerate age, and that chanting its title, the daimoku, was the practice suited to the times. The schools that trace to him, including the lay movements Soka Gakkai and Nichiren Shoshu founded centuries later, still read their own origin through that same claim. Both answers assume mappo as a shared fact of religious history and diverge entirely on what follows from it. Both movements trace their own founding directly to this shared diagnosis of the age.
