In Manichaean cosmology the visible world is not a creation but a machine built to process a disaster. Light swallowed in the first assault is distributed through matter, and the sun, the moon and the turning of the heavens are the apparatus by which it is separated out and returned. A person's soul is a portion of that Light, so salvation is less the rescue of an individual than the release of what the individual is carrying. This is why the tradition is severe about food. The Elect kept a restricted vegetarian diet and did not harvest or prepare it themselves, because cutting and grinding wound the Light held in plants; the Hearers did that work and brought the food, and the digestion of the Elect was held to free the Light in it. Opponents found the idea absurd and said so at length, which is one reason so much of what was long known about Manichaean practice came from hostile summaries. The Coptic codices and the Iranian and Turkic fragments recovered in the twentieth century allow the doctrine to be read from the inside.

The Living Spirit's Vessels and Why the Moon Waxes and Wanes
Manichaean cosmology gives the rescue of Light a named architect and a named mechanism rather than leaving it as a vague natural process. After the primal assault, a second divine emissary called the Living Spirit is sent to begin the recovery, and among his acts is the construction of the sun and moon as vessels, literal ships built to carry rescued Light upward and out of the material world in stages. The moon is described as filling and emptying across its visible phases because it is receiving Light from below and transferring it onward to the sun, and the sun in turn carries what it receives further out toward the Realm of Light the disaster began by losing, so the ordinary waxing and waning visible to anyone was, on this account, a directly observable stage of a rescue operation running overhead at all times.
The scheme answers a problem other than the ethical one the Three Seals address. Where the Seals govern what a person on earth may do to avoid adding further harm, the Living Spirit's machinery explains how the Light already lost is being recovered independent of any individual's conduct, a process underway on a cosmic timetable regardless of human choice. Opponents treated the vessel imagery as one of the more easily mocked parts of Manichaean teaching, but the recovered Coptic and Central Asian texts show it functioning as serious physics within the system, an account of what the sun and moon actually are and do, not a decorative flourish on top of the ethical teaching.
