Ennoia, Greek for Thought, is the consort (syzygy) of Bythos and, with him, the root pair of the Valentinian Ogdoad according to Irenaeus of Lyons's report of the school of Ptolemy. She is coeternal with Bythos, his own capacity for self-reflection given a distinct hypostatic existence beside him, and together they emanate Nous and Aletheia, the second pair of the Pleroma. Irenaeus records that Valentinian teachers did not agree on a single name for this figure: some called her Ennoia, others Sige, Silence, emphasizing the profound quiet that preceded the beginning of emanation, and still others Charis, Grace. The variance is treated in the scholarship as evidence of real diversity among Valentinian schools rather than as a copying error, since Irenaeus reports it as a live disagreement among the teachers he is describing.
