Cleaving to the mature man and thereby letting go of the little boy shows the corrected choice, one who follows what one seeks and gains by holding firm to it. Standing at the top of the lower trigram Zhen and reaching up toward the strong fourth line, it makes the harder choice the second line refused, and the text asks it to hold to that choice firmly.

Holding to the Man of Experience and Letting the Little Boy Go

The third line performs the second line's choice in reverse and gains something by it. Legge's translation shows its subject cleaving to the man of age and experience and letting go the little boy, states that such following will get what it seeks, and then attaches a condition, that it will be advantageous to adhere to what is firm and correct. The gain is granted immediately; the warning arrives with it, and the two belong together.

A yielding stroke stands in an odd place here, incorrectly positioned by the rule, at the top of the lower trigram Zhen and reaching up toward the strong fourth line above. The reach is what the line is. It gives up the nearer attachment below in favour of the more substantial one further off, which is precisely the trade the second line declined to make, and its incorrect placement is a fair picture of the discomfort involved in stretching past what is comfortable.

Why the condition is needed becomes clear once the gain is taken seriously. A person who has attached themselves to something worth following gets what they were after, and getting what one was after is the point at which the following can quietly turn into leverage. Firmness here means holding to the relationship on the same terms it was entered on, so that the pursuit does not become a claim on the person pursued once the association has started paying.

Getting What You Sought by Giving Up What Was Comfortable

Six in the third place is a favourable line with a bill attached, and a querent who draws it is usually being shown a trade they have made or are about to make. Something nearer, easier and more familiar is set down in favour of something more demanding and further away, and the reading says the exchange works: what is sought will be obtained. The line is unusual in the text for granting the result up front rather than making it conditional.

The condition it does impose falls after the gain rather than before it. Adhering to what is firm and correct is the instruction, and in a reading it means that the new attachment must be kept on honest terms once it starts producing benefits. The failure this guards against is subtle and common: a querent who followed something worthwhile begins, after some success, to treat the association as an entitlement, or to trade on the name of the person they followed.

There is also a plainer use of the line, for querents wondering whether an earlier version of this choice can still be reversed. The second line of the same hexagram shows the trade going the other way, and the fact that both appear in one figure means the text regards the direction as changeable. Setting down the comfortable attachment is described here as a live option with a stated reward, and the discomfort of reaching further is treated as the ordinary cost of it.
