Each is a closed set whose members are read singly and in combination. They are the systems most often used as a lens on the others, which is why they connect so widely across the Atlas.FactsCategories in This SectionLearn MoreSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0 open reader challenges)FactsOverviewScope of This SectionWell-attestedDivinatory and number-symbolic systems: tarot, runes, numerology and sacred geometry 1Categories in This SectionTarot78Major Arcana22Minor Arcana56Tarot Decks28One undivided list of 28 entries.Tarot Suits4One undivided list of 4 entries.Runes24One undivided list of 24 entries.Rune Aetts3One undivided list of 3 entries.Numbers119One undivided list of 119 entries.Numerology Positions37Achievement Number2Birth Number3Challenge Number6Cycle Number3Karmic Number1Name Number11Pinnacle Number7Place Number2Timing Number2Numerology Systems6One undivided list of 6 entries.I Ching Hexagrams64Earth Upper Trigram8Fire Upper Trigram8Heaven Upper Trigram8Lake Upper Trigram8Mountain Upper Trigram8Thunder Upper Trigram8Water Upper Trigram8Wind Upper Trigram8Sacred Geometry34Form11Pattern7Platonic Solid5Polygon11Hexagram Lines384Abundance6After Completion6Approach6Before Completion6Biting Through6Breakthrough6Coming to Meet6Conflict6Contemplation6Darkening of the Light6Decrease6Deliverance6Development6Difficulty at the Beginning6Dispersion6Duration6Enthusiasm6Fellowship6Following6Gathering Together6Grace6Great Possession6Great Power6Great Preponderance6Great Taming6Holding Together6Increase6Influence6Inner Truth6Innocence6Keeping Still6Limitation6Modesty6Nourishment6Obstruction6Opposition6Oppression6Peace6Progress6Pushing Upward6Retreat6Return6Revolution6Small Preponderance6Small Taming6Splitting Apart6Standstill6The Abysmal6The Army6The Arousing6The Cauldron6The Clinging6The Creative6The Family6The Gentle6The Joyous6The Marrying Maiden6The Receptive6The Wanderer6The Well6Treading6Waiting6Work on the Decayed6Youthful Folly6Younger Futhark Runes16One undivided list of 16 entries.Anglo-Saxon Futhorc Runes29Feoh's Aett8Haegl's Aett8Later English Addition5Tir's Aett8Oracle Decks36One undivided list of 36 entries.Other SectionsTraditions & PathsOrders, Societies & MovementsBeliefs & ObservancesSacred Objects, Dress & SymbolsDeities & Sacred FiguresPeople & PractitionersBeings & CreaturesAstrology & the HeavensVedic AstrologyEastern SystemsDivination SystemsKabbalah & the Tree of LifeCeremonial & Esoteric MagicAngels, Spirits & the ShadowVirtues & VicesSacred PlacesCosmology & RealmsTexts & the CanonElements & the Natural WorldMetaphysics & MatterThe Body & Its CentresModern Synthesis SystemsModern RevivalsCalendars & TimeCosmic CyclesMoreLearn MoreComplete Alphabets of Meaning This section gathers the symbol sets that function as closed alphabets of meaning, fixed collections in which every member has a defined sense and the members combine to say more. It holds the seventy-eight cards of the tarot and their four suits, the runes of the Germanic futharks, the numbers of numerology and their positions, the sixty-four hexagrams and eight trigrams of the I Ching, and the figures of sacred geometry. Each of these is at once a set of symbols and, for many users, a method: the tarot dealt into a spread, the runes cast, the hexagram obtained by counting yarrow stalks or coins, the birth name reduced to a number.Ancient and modern, side by side The ages of these systems differ sharply, and the entries say so. The runes are attested in inscriptions from the second century CE; the I Ching's core is older still. The tarot, by contrast, begins as a fifteenth-century Italian card game and acquires its esoteric meanings only from the late eighteenth century onward, while much of modern numerology is a nineteenth- and twentieth-century construction on a Pythagorean base. Grouping them together reflects how they are used rather than a claim of common origin. Divinatory method as such, how a question is put and an answer read, is treated more fully under Divination Systems, with which this section overlaps.Sources1.
