No Association Yet with What May Harm, at the Very Start of Abundance

The first line of Possession in Great Measure opens the hexagram before its central subject, abundance, has actually arrived in any tested form. Legge's translation describes a state in which there is as yet no association with what is injurious, and adds that there is no error so long as the difficulty that will eventually come is kept in mind rather than forgotten. The line does not promise that great possession will remain untroubled forever. It only observes that at this earliest point, nothing harmful has yet made contact with it, and that this innocence is itself worth preserving through awareness rather than complacency.

Hexagram 14 places Fire above Heaven, the sun shining over all things, and its Judgment promises supreme success to whoever holds great possession rightly. The first line stands at the foot of that promise, before wealth, influence, or ability have drawn any of the envy or opposition that abundance typically attracts. Nothing here is yet won or lost; the line simply marks the moment before exposure begins.

This is the base of the lower trigram Qian, heaven's own trigram, and a yang line correctly occupies this odd position, giving the opening of great possession a soundness matched to its innocence. The line's entire counsel is contained in that one phrase, no error, provided awareness of coming difficulty is kept: strength has not yet been tested, but keeping watch now is what allows the following five lines to build on solid ground rather than false security.

Reading Nine at the Beginning and the Innocence Abundance Will Later Test

As a divinatory line, the first nine of Great Possession tells a querent that whatever wealth, opportunity, or capability the reading concerns has not yet met any real test or opposition. The absence of injury here is not achievement, only circumstance, and the line's explicit condition, that there be no error only so long as difficulty still to come is kept in view, is a warning against mistaking present ease for permanent safety. A reading landing here often marks the earliest stage of a fortunate situation, one whose real challenges have not yet arrived.

Correctly placed at the base of the lower trigram Qian, the line carries none of the caution the fourth and fifth lines will later require, precisely because nothing has yet risen high enough to draw scrutiny or envy. This is the natural condition of beginnings: abundance not yet displayed is abundance not yet contested. The querent is advised to use this quiet interval to prepare rather than to assume it will last.

Read against the hexagram's full arc, from this untested start through the generous third line, the discreet fourth, the trusted fifth, and the aided sixth, the first line supplies the foundation every later line depends on: an early awareness that great possession, however innocent now, will eventually require the discretion, generosity, and humility the hexagram spends its remaining lines describing.
