Standstill is being brought to an end, a fortunate sign for the great man, but the situation should still be tied down as if fastened to a mulberry root, since gains at this stage remain fragile. Firm, central and correctly placed in the upper trigram Qian, this is the ruling line of the hexagram and the only position with both the standing and the correctness to reverse the closure.

Stopping the Stoppage and Tying It to a Clump of Mulberry

The fifth line is where Standstill is actually brought to an end, and the text spends most of its words on how insecure that ending is. Legge's translation shows the subject stopping the stoppage and obstruction, with good fortune to the great man, and then puts words in his mouth: we may perish, we may perish. Held in that fear, the situation becomes firm, as if bound to a clump of bushy mulberry trees. The small commentary attributes the good fortune to the correctness of the position and says nothing further, leaving the anxiety in the text to do its own work.

Firm, central and correctly placed in the upper trigram Qian, this is the ruling line of the hexagram and the only position in it with both the standing and the correctness to reverse the closure. The mulberry image is agricultural and specific. A mulberry stump throws up a dense clump of shoots with roots that grip, and a thing tied to it is tied to something that holds because it is many rooted rather than because it is large.

What the line refuses to do is celebrate. Standstill has not been overthrown here, only stopped, and the difference matters to the reading of the sixth line that follows. The great man's repeated fear of perishing is not a failure of nerve but the mechanism by which the recovery is made to hold, and the text treats that vigilance as the thing being credited when it promises good fortune.

Fragile Recovery and the Sunrise That Follows It

Nine in the fifth place tells a querent that a bad period is ending and that the ending will not hold itself together without deliberate effort. As a changing line it concerns the moment a closure is reversed, and its whole counsel is about securing the reversal: fastening the new arrangement to something with many roots, keeping the memory of how easily it could fail, and treating the recovery as fragile for exactly as long as it actually is.

Flipping this firm stroke to yielding changes the upper trigram Qian into Li, fire, and fire over earth gives Progress, King Wen 35, whose image is the sun rising above the earth and whose subject is steady advancement and recognition. The transformation shows where this line is heading when its work holds. Yielding here is not weakness but the relaxation that becomes safe once the arrangement is genuinely tied down, and Progress is what a stopped stoppage turns into when it has been secured rather than merely achieved.

A reading landing here is favorable and asks for exactly the vigilance the text dramatizes. The querent is counseled to take the improvement seriously enough to protect it, to fasten it to whatever in their situation has real roots, and to resist the temptation to treat the first relief as the finished result. The sunrise in the transformed figure belongs to whoever does that work now.
