Juxtaposition Cross of Opinions (17/18)

The Juxtaposition Cross of Opinions is named for Gate 17 and Gate 18. Human Design reads Gate 17, from Hexagram 17, Following, sits in the Ajna and is read as logical opinions that want to be organised and offered to others; and Gate 18, from Hexagram 18, Work on the Decayed, sits in the Spleen and is read as an alertness to what is flawed and could be set right. Juxtaposition Crosses form their own family, belonging only to the four line one profile, and Human Design reads them as the tightest, least steerable of the three kinds.

Its design half is Gate 38 and Gate 39, both seated in the Root. Gate 38 is read as the drive to oppose, needing something worth opposing so the fight has a point; it pairs with Gate 28 in the channel of Struggle. Gate 39 is read as the pressure that stirs feeling in others, to discover whether there is any spirit in them; it pairs with Gate 55 in the channel of Emoting.

So a chart carrying this cross forms opinions and corrects flaws on its exposed surface, while beneath it a Root pair of opposition and provocation presses for a fight and a spirit worth testing. The hexagrams are ancient; grouping them into one incarnation cross is the modern system's own construction.

Its first article reads Gate 17 as logical opinions that want to be organised and offered to others, now the more exposed gate, and Gate 18 as an alertness to what is flawed and could be set right. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this cross draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 17, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind. Gate 18, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding. Behind them, Gate 38 falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation, and Gate 39 falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form.

So the organised opinion and the corrected flaw the first article reads on this cross's surface answer to the arcs of mind and bonding, while the drive to oppose and the tested spirit beneath them answer to the arcs of transformation and form. The same pair, exchanged, is this cross's own reversal, the Juxtaposition Cross of Correction, and, held instead in the Left Angle family, the Cross of Upheaval, both orderings; the Right Angle family carries the identical pair too, as the Cross of Service, both orderings. Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc: this cross draws its whole reading from every corner of the wheel's own purpose rather than concentrated in one.
