Left Angle Cross of Individualism (39/38)

The Left Angle Cross of Individualism carries the same four gates as the Juxtaposition Cross of Provocation, held here in the fated Left Angle family instead. Human Design reads Gate 39, from Hexagram 39, Obstruction, sits in the Root and is read as the pressure that stirs feeling in others, to discover whether there is any spirit in them; and Gate 38, from Hexagram 38, Opposition, also seated in the Root, is read as the drive to oppose, needing something worth opposing. It belongs to the Left Angle family, read as transpersonal, a direction practitioners describe as answering less to personal choice than to what circumstance hands the individual.

Its design half is Gate 51 and Gate 57, unchanged from the Cross of Provocation. Gate 51 sits in the Heart, or Will, centre and is read as competitive courage that goes first and can startle others awake; it pairs with Gate 25 in the channel of Initiation. Gate 57 sits in the Spleen and is read as intuition in the present moment, one of the closed group of four Integration gates.

Where the Juxtaposition reading fixes this same provocation to a single profile, the Left Angle reading holds it as a role circumstance keeps handing back rather than a personal stance, the shocking initiative beneath it unchanged either way. The hexagrams are ancient; grouping them into one transpersonal cross is the modern system's own construction, dated to 1987.

This Left Angle Cross of Individualism completes its two role arrangements with this ordering, Gate 39 and Gate 38 exposed, the pressure that tests for spirit ahead of the drive to oppose. Its first article reads Gate 39 as the pressure that stirs feeling in others, to discover whether there is any spirit in them, now the more exposed gate, and Gate 38 as the drive to oppose, needing something worth opposing so the fight has a point. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this ordering draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 39, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form. Gate 38, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation. Behind them, Gate 51 falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind, and Gate 57 falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding.

So the test of spirit and the drive to oppose the first article reads on this ordering's surface answer to the arcs of form and transformation, while the startling courage and the present moment intuition beneath them answer to the arcs of mind and bonding, the same four arcs the earlier ordering of Individualism also draws on however its two pairs are assigned to personality and design. With both arrangements in place, Individualism's two gate pairs share the same wheel wide spread, one gate from each Quarter regardless of order.
