Left Angle Cross of Limitation (42/32)

The Left Angle Cross of Limitation carries the same pair as the Juxtaposition Cross of Completion, Gate 42 and Gate 32. Human Design reads Gate 42, from Hexagram 42, Increase, sitting in the Sacral centre, as the energy to carry a process through to its natural end; and Gate 32, from Hexagram 32, Duration, sitting in the Spleen, as the instinct for what will last, and caution about change for its own sake. It belongs to the Left Angle family, read as transpersonal, a direction practitioners describe as answering less to personal choice than to what circumstance hands the individual.

Its design half is Gate 60 and Gate 56, unchanged from the Cross of Completion. Gate 60 sits in the Root and is read as the acceptance of limitation, the only ground from which real change can grow; it pairs with Gate 3 in the channel of Mutation. Gate 56 sits in the Throat and is read as the storyteller, whose ideas draw on experience whether or not they are accurate; it pairs with Gate 11 in the channel of Curiosity.

Where the Juxtaposition reading fixes this finishing instinct to a single profile, the Left Angle reading holds it as a role circumstance keeps handing back, the same acceptance of limits and restless storytelling beneath it either way. The same pair also underlies the Juxtaposition Cross of Completion, and reverses as the Cross of Conservation and the Left Angle Cross of Limitation under the opposite ordering. The hexagrams are ancient; grouping them into one transpersonal cross is the modern system's own construction, dated to 1987.

The Left Angle Cross of Limitation completes its two role arrangements with this ordering, Gate 42 and Gate 32 exposed, a process carried to its end ahead of an instinct for what lasts. Its first article reads Gate 42 as the energy to carry a process through to its natural end, now the more exposed gate, and Gate 32 as an instinct for what will last, cautious of change undertaken for its own sake. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this ordering draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 42, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind. Gate 32, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding. Behind them, Gate 60 falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation, and Gate 56 falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form.

So the process carried to its end and the instinct for what lasts the first article reads on this ordering's surface answer to the arcs of mind and bonding, while the acceptance of limitation and the storyteller's ideas beneath them answer to the arcs of transformation and form, the same four arcs the earlier ordering of Limitation also draws on however its two pairs are assigned to personality and design. With both arrangements in place, Limitation's two gate pairs share the same wheel wide spread, one gate from each Quarter regardless of order.
