Surya Mudra is a mudra, a symbolic hand-gesture of the Indian religious traditions, known in Sanskrit as Surya Mudra and signifying the seal of the sun.
Form and meaning
In this seal the ring finger is folded down and pressed by the thumb. Named for the sun, it is associated in yogic tradition with warmth, energy and vitality.
Mudras appear across Hindu and Buddhist ritual, iconography, classical dance and yoga, where a fixed position of the hands carries a settled meaning or is held to direct attention and breath. The gesture is described here within those documented traditions.
Sources and caution
Surya Mudra, the ring finger folded and pressed by the thumb while the other three fingers extend, is presented within the same modern finger-element scheme as increasing agni, bodily heat, and is popularly associated with the sun, surya, and with boosting metabolism, sometimes recommended in contemporary yoga and naturopathy contexts for weight management, a therapeutic claim that has not been evaluated by controlled clinical research and should be read as the tradition's own stated purpose rather than as an established medical finding. No major classical Hatha text describes this exact finger pairing under the name Surya Mudra.
