The Pythagorean system is the most widely used Western name numerology, assigning the numbers 1 to 9 across the Latin alphabet in a repeating grid: A, J and S take 1, B, K and T take 2, and so on through I, R and Z at 9. A name or birth date is reduced by adding its digits until a single figure remains, except at 11, 22 and 33, the master numbers, which are read unreduced. Despite the name, no ancient Pythagorean source assigns numeric values to Latin letters this way; the method is a modern Western invention of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, retrospectively attached to Pythagoras for the prestige of his real and separate teaching that number underlies the cosmos.

CalculationSourced to the subject's own account
Each letter takes a value 1 to 9 in a repeating nine-column grid (A,J,S=1 through I,R,Z=9); a name or date is reduced by digit sum to a single figure, except 11, 22 and 33, read unreduced as master numbers. 1
Calendar Type
Because the 26-letter Latin alphabet does not divide evenly into nine value-columns, the grid closes unevenly: eight of the nine columns receive three letters each (A,J,S through H,Q,Z) while the ninth, the column for I and R, receives only two, the sole irregularity in an otherwise perfectly repeating one-to-nine cycle. 2

Historical Origin
Presented as a direct teaching of Pythagoras, but no ancient Pythagorean or classical source assigns Latin letters numeric values this way; the alphanumeric grid is a modern Western esoteric method of the late 1800s and early 1900s. 2
The system's working method is real and widely practised; what is false is the claim of unbroken transmission from Pythagoras himself. His genuine teaching was that number underlies reality, a much older and separate claim.
Use
Ritual UseSourced to the subject's own account
Practiced today chiefly as personal character analysis and life guidance: a name or birth date reduces to a life path, expression or destiny number consulted for career choices and relationship compatibility, and some practitioners recommend deliberately respelling a name to change its numeric total. 1

How the Grid Assigns Value

The Pythagorean system lays the twenty six letters of the Latin alphabet across a grid of nine columns and repeats the sequence three times: A, J and S fall under 1; B, K and T under 2; C, L and U under 3, and so on through I, R and Z under 9. Every name and every date reduces to a single digit by adding its component numbers together and, if the result runs to two digits, adding those together again, a process called digit summing or theosophical reduction. A birth date of the fourth of July, 1990, for instance, sums each unit, 4 plus 7 plus 1 plus 9 plus 9 plus 0, and reduces the total the same way names are reduced.

Three totals are treated as exceptions and never reduced past two digits: 11, 22 and 33, called the master numbers. Practitioners read them as carrying an intensified version of the single digit they would otherwise reduce to, 2, 4 and 6 respectively, so a life path or name total landing on one of the three is read on its own terms rather than folded further. The grid itself is entirely mechanical once memorized; every calculation in the system, whether applied to a name, a birth date or an address, uses this same one to nine table and the same reduction rule, which is what makes the method easy to teach and to practise without specialist training.

From Ancient Arithmology to Modern Numerology

The historical Pythagoras and the school that followed him did hold that number underlies the structure of reality, most famously through the tetractys, a triangular arrangement of ten points read as the source of all proportion and harmony. Ancient Pythagorean arithmology assigned symbolic qualities to numbers themselves, odd against even, the perfection of the decad, and connected number to music through ratios of string length. None of that ancient material, however, assigns numeric values to the letters of the Latin alphabet, and no source earlier than the modern period reduces a name to a single digit by the method taught today.

The alphanumeric grid now called Pythagorean numerology took shape in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries within Western esoteric and New Thought circles, popularized above all by the Irish palmist and numerologist known as Cheiro and, in the United States, by writers such as L. Dow Balliett, whose books on names and numbers set much of the vocabulary the practice still uses. Attaching the name of Pythagoras lent the method a classical authority his own teaching never specifically claimed for it. The honest description is therefore a system that draws its philosophical mood from real Pythagorean number mysticism while its actual mechanism, the letter grid and the digit reduction, is a modern invention with no unbroken lineage back to Samos.
