No contemporary likeness of Maimonides, who died in 1204, is known to survive, and peer-reviewed appraisal has found the face itself "utterly imaginative," an invented image by an unidentified artist, though the signature accompanying it has been separately verified as authentic against Cairo Genizah documents. Rediscovered and popularized in the nineteenth century by the scholar Yashar Reggio, it became, and remains, the standard portrait reproduced worldwide under Maimonides's name.Cross-Tradition ConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0 open reader challenges)Cross-Tradition ConnectionsAssociated WithCairo, Cities Well-attested This source names Cairo directly: "verified as authentic against Cairo Genizah documents."Source The Maimonides Portrait: An Appraisal of One of the World's Most Famous Pictures (Schwartz, Rambam Maimonides Medical Journal, 2011)tier 1Venice, Cities Well-attested This source names Venice directly: "an encyclopedic work printed in Venice."Source The Maimonides Portrait: An Appraisal of One of the World's Most Famous Pictures (Schwartz, Rambam Maimonides Medical Journal, 2011)tier 1Belongs to TraditionJudaism, Religions Well-attested Source The Maimonides Portrait: An Appraisal of One of the World's Most Famous Pictures (Schwartz, Rambam Maimonides Medical Journal, 2011)tier 1DepictsMaimonides, Figures Well-attested The engraving's claimed and, per both agreeing records, universally adopted subject since circa 1744, though peer-reviewed appraisal finds the likeness itself invented rather than authentic; the corroborating Wikipedia record independently uses the same image as its own portrait of him.Source The Maimonides Portrait: An Appraisal of One of the World's Most Famous Pictures (Schwartz, Rambam Maimonides Medical Journal, 2011)tier 1Additional Source Maimonides (Wikipedia)tier 3SourcesThe Maimonides Portrait: An Appraisal of One of the World's Most Famous Pictures (Schwartz, Rambam Maimonides Medical Journal, 2011)tier 1Rambam Maimonides Medical JournalView the SourceMaimonides (Wikipedia)tier 3WikipediaDepicts: MaimonidesQuote, Depicts: MaimonidesPosthumous engraving in Thesaurus Antiquitatum Sacrarum, from which all modern portraits of Maimonides are derived, circa 1744.View the SourceComments (0)No comments yet.
