The article dates the engraving's first appearance to Blasius Ugolinus's 1744 encyclopedic work Thesaurus Antiquitatum Sacrarum, published in Venice, finds the portrait itself "utterly imaginative" rather than an authentic likeness since no contemporary image of Maimonides, who died in 1204, is known to survive, but confirms the accompanying signature as genuine against Cairo Genizah documents. It records that the image was rediscovered and popularized in the nineteenth century by the scholar Yashar Reggio and became the worldwide standard Maimonides likeness by the early twentieth century.FactsCross-Tradition ConnectionsClaims Backed By This Source (13 claims)Comments (0)Reader Challenges (0 open reader challenges)FactsAssessmentReliability TierWell-attested1A peer-reviewed journal article dedicated specifically to appraising this exact image's origin and authenticity, the strongest available record for its date, publication, artist status and reception history, including its own honest conclusion that the portrait is imagined rather than authentic.CitationPublisherWell-attestedRambam Maimonides Medical JournalURLWell-attestedhttps://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3678793/Source TypeWell-attestedpeer-reviewed articleCross-Tradition ConnectionsAssociated WithCairo, Cities Well-attested This source names Cairo directly: "signature as genuine against Cairo Genizah documents."Source The Maimonides Portrait: An Appraisal of One of the World's Most Famous Pictures (Schwartz, Rambam Maimonides Medical Journal, 2011)tier 1Venice, Cities Well-attested This source names Venice directly: "Antiquitatum Sacrarum, published in Venice, finds the portrait itself "utterly imaginative" rather than an authentic likeness since no contemporary image of Maimonides, who died in 1204, is known to..."Source The Maimonides Portrait: An Appraisal of One of the World's Most Famous Pictures (Schwartz, Rambam Maimonides Medical Journal, 2011)tier 1Claims Backed By This Source (13 claims)This source backs 13 claims across the atlas.
