A Century and a Quarter, Told by the Order Itself
When the Ramakrishna Mission reached its 125th anniversary on 1 May 2022, Belur Math, the Order's own headquarters on the west bank of the Hooghly River, did not mark the date with a private ceremony alone. It partnered with ABP Ananda, one of Bengal's leading television news channels, to produce a documentary telling its own history to a general audience, in Bengali first and in English weeks later.
The film traces the Mission back to its founding by Swami Vivekananda in the name of his teacher, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, and follows the organization forward through a century and a quarter of expansion into education, medicine and disaster relief carried out under the same founding motto of service understood as worship. Belur Math describes the film's own purpose as showing how that motto has been upheld in practice across both India and the Order's international branch centers, a claim a viewer can weigh directly against the film's own footage rather than take only on faith.
What makes Blooming Lotus of Humanity worth noting as media representation, rather than simply as institutional promotion, is its afterlife: branch centers around the world subsequently dubbed it into several further Indian and international languages, extending a single anniversary production into an ongoing multilingual record of how one of modern Hinduism's most consequential monastic orders chooses to describe itself, in its own words, to audiences who may never visit Belur Math in person.
