A screen work entry records a film, television production or other moving image work that engages religion directly: depicting a specific tradition, retelling a sacred narrative, or built around explicitly religious subject matter, distinct from a work that merely features a religious character or setting in passing. An entry records a work's director, its year and place of origin, and the specific tradition or narrative it engages, along with how that tradition or its adherents actually received the finished work. That reception is often its own separate fact worth recording: a screen depiction of a sacred figure or story praised as reverent by one audience can be read as a serious misrepresentation by another, and the entry keeps the work's content and the response it generated as two connected but distinct documented facts.

What a Screen Work Entry Covers

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

A screen work entry records a film, television production or other moving image work that engages religion directly, depicting a specific tradition, retelling a sacred narrative, or built around explicitly religious subject matter, distinct from a work that merely happens to feature a religious character or setting in passing. The Routledge Companion to Religion and Film treats this as a real, developed field of study in its own right rather than a marginal note to either film studies or religious studies, tracing how the two disciplines have shaped each other since the earliest religious epics of silent cinema.

An entry records a work's director, its year and place of origin, and the specific tradition or narrative it engages, along with how that tradition or its adherents actually received the finished work, since a screen depiction of a sacred figure or story is very often received very differently by the tradition it depicts than by a general audience encountering the same images with no prior stake in them.

That gap in reception, a work praised as reverent by one audience and condemned as a serious misrepresentation by another, is itself part of what an entry records, since a screen work's religious content and the controversy or acceptance it generated are frequently two connected but separately documented facts about the same production.

How Scholars Read Religion in Film

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Reading a film's religious content seriously means going beyond simply noting which tradition it depicts on the surface. Flannery-Dailey and Wagner's study of The Matrix reads a work with no explicit religious setting at all for the deeper theological structure underneath it, tracing specifically Gnostic and Buddhist patterns, a hidden true reality behind an illusory one, an awakening that only a chosen figure can trigger, embedded in a film its own makers marketed as straightforward science fiction.

That approach treats a film's religious content as something that can be present and doing real work whether or not the film ever names a tradition on screen, which is a genuinely different task from studying a film that depicts an actual historical scripture or founder directly. Both kinds of study belong to the same field, reading explicit religious epics and reading implicit religious structure inside secular seeming stories, and a screen work entry notes which kind of religious content a given work actually carries.

That distinction matters for how an entry is written. A work depicting a specific historical tradition is checked against how that tradition's own adherents received it; a work carrying implicit religious structure with no named tradition on screen is instead checked against the scholarly reading that identified the structure in the first place, and an entry says plainly which kind of claim it is making.
