Batinism in Al-Andalus: Maslama b. Qasim al-Qurtubi, Author of the Rutbat al-Hakim and the Ghayat al-Hakim (Picatrix), Maribel Fierro's 1996 article in Studia Islamica number 84, is the peer reviewed study that reopened the question of which historical Maslama actually wrote the Ghayat al-Hakim, the Arabic text behind the Latin Picatrix. Its strength is close philological argument by an established specialist in Andalusi Islamic history, in a leading journal of Islamic studies. Its limit is that authorship questions of this kind in medieval Arabic esoteric literature often remain genuinely contested; later scholarship engaging Fierro's argument should be checked for where the debate now stands.
