Genesis Rabbah (Bereshit Rabbah)

This is Genesis Rabbah, a classical rabbinic midrash offering verse-by-verse homiletical and narrative expansion on the Book of Genesis, including its treatment of figures such as Abraham, Hagar and Esau. As a primary rabbinic text it is the correct source for what this specific interpretive tradition says, in its own words. Its limit is that it is one particular midrashic tradition's elaboration on Genesis, compiled by rabbinic editors well after the biblical text itself, so a claim treating its narrative expansions as part of the plain biblical account rather than this later interpretive tradition's own addition needs to be corrected against that distinction.
