Kukai: Major Works

Yoshito Hakeda was a scholar of Japanese Buddhism, and this book, published by Columbia University Press, presents an academic translation of the major works of Kukai, the founder of Japanese Shingon Buddhism, together with Hakeda's own scholarly introduction to Kukai's life and thought. Its strength is presenting Kukai's own writing directly in careful English translation rather than a secondhand paraphrase, letting a reader see the founder's actual arguments for his esoteric Buddhist system. Hakeda's introduction situates the translated texts within their historical and doctrinal context. Its limit is that as one scholar's translation and selection, specific difficult passages of Kukai's dense esoteric writing may read differently in another translator's hands, so contested technical points are best cross checked where precision matters.
