La Civilisation Sereer: Cosaan, les Origines

Henry Gravrand was an ethnographer of the Sereer people of Senegal, and this Nouvelles Editions Africaines book, the first volume of his planned trilogy on Sereer civilization, is his ethnographic study of Sereer origins, prefaced by Leopold Sedar Senghor. Verified as a genuine and still cited scholarly work, its strength is that it draws on extended fieldwork and local sources for a people whose religious and social history is otherwise thinly documented in Western scholarship. Its limit is the reason for its tier two placement: Gravrand wrote from a missionary background rather than as a fully independent academic ethnographer, so a claim resting on his interpretive framing should be checked against later, more independent Sereer scholarship where it exists.
