La Religion des Turcs et des Mongols, Jean-Paul Roux's 1984 study from Payot, is a standard scholarly French language reference on the pre-conversion religion of the Turkic and Mongolic peoples by a leading French scholar of Central Asian religious history, with direct command of the Orkhon inscriptions recording Tengri, Umai and the powers of earth and water. Its strength is that direct primary source command. Its limit is that it is written in French, limiting direct accessibility for readers without the language, and as with any single scholar's synthesis, it should be read alongside independent studies of the same primary inscriptions for corroboration.

Notes
French language. A standard scholarly reference on the pre-conversion religion of the Turkic and Mongolic peoples by a leading French scholar of Central Asian religious history, covering Tengri, Umai and the powers of earth and water the Orkhon inscriptions record, independent of Golden's history and Laruelle's study of the modern revival, both already live sources here.
