C.R. Boxer's The Christian Century in Japan, 1549 to 1650, University of California Press, 1951, corrected reprint 1967, is the foundational English-language academic study of the whole Kirishitan century: Francis Xavier's 1549 landing at Kagoshima, the mission's growth to roughly three hundred thousand converts, and its escalating suppression under Hideyoshi and the Tokugawa shogunate, from the 1587 edict through the 1597 Nagasaki martyrdoms, the 1614 nationwide expulsion order, the 1637-1638 Shimabara Rebellion, and the 1639 sakoku isolation policy that sealed the country to missionary access. Still the standard reference cited across the later specialist literature on this period.

Reliability Tier1
Major university press academic monograph, long the foundational English-language study of this period and still cited as the standard reference in the later specialist literature; used here for both the 1549 arrival and the escalating Tokugawa suppression, since Boxer's own account treats the two as one continuous, well documented arc rather than two unrelated episodes. NotesUsed for Francis Xavier's 1549 arrival at Kagoshima and the escalating Tokugawa-era suppression of Christianity in Japan through the 1639 sakoku policy. Reused across two spread-event pages rather than minted twice.
