This is the Collected Works of St. John of the Cross, in Kieran Kavanaugh and Otilio Rodriguez's standard modern translation published by ICS Publications, the Institute of Carmelite Studies, in 1991, covering both The Dark Night and The Ascent of Mount Carmel. As the standard critical translation used across Carmelite and mystical theology scholarship it is the correct source for John's own text in careful modern English. Its limit is that it is a primary devotional and mystical text, John's own account of the soul's ascent, not a scholarly historical study of Carmelite reform or of John's own biography, so a claim about that surrounding history needs a source addressing it separately.
