The Uley Shrines: Excavation of a Ritual Complex on West Hill, Uley, Gloucestershire, 1977-79

Ann Woodward and Peter Leach's The Uley Shrines, Excavation of a Ritual Complex on West Hill, Uley, Gloucestershire, 1977-79, published by English Heritage as Archaeological Report 17 in 1993, is the primary excavation report for a Romano-British religious site with continuous ritual use from the Neolithic through the seventh or eighth century CE, including the temple of Mercury and, within the report, R. S. O. Tomlin's specialist edition of the site's inscribed lead curse tablets. Its strength is that it is the excavators' own primary report, published through a national heritage body with the tablets edited by a leading Romano-British epigrapher. Its limit is that it is a technical excavation report aimed at specialists, so a claim about the broader religious meaning of curse tablet practice across Roman Britain needs a synthesising source beyond this single site's own findings.
