On 26 January 2016, Tenrikyo held the Oyasama 130th Anniversary Service in the Main Sanctuary of its Church Headquarters in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture, Japan, marking the hundred thirtieth year since foundress Nakayama Miki withdrew from physical life on 26 January 1887 by the lunar calendar. Shinbashira Zenji Nakayama presided as chief officiant. Approximately two hundred thousand followers, including about two thousand eight hundred from overseas, returned to Jiba, the faith's holy site, to observe the anniversary, the largest of the decennial milestone services the faith holds on Oyasama's death date. The observance closed a three year preparatory period the church had called on followers to spend in spiritual renewal ahead of the anniversary.
