Women the epics carry as their central figures, shelved apart from the heroes because the traditions themselves praise different qualities in them, endurance and fidelity more often than feats of arms. Where a tradition gives such a woman a title of its own, queen, saint or prophet, the atlas follows that title instead, so this shelf gathers fewer figures than the epics themselves would suggest.
