Occultists, magicians and esotericists practiced or theorized a ritual or initiatory working, ceremonial magic, Theosophy, Rosicrucianism or their Renaissance and legendary forebears, distinct from the astrologers and diviners who read signs rather than perform workings, and from the alchemists whose own laboratory practice forms its own heading. This is the largest single heading in the type because the Western esoteric current runs continuously from Hermes Trismegistus and the Renaissance magi through the Golden Dawn to the New Age systems of the twentieth century.
