A mantra-like formula from the wider repertoire of ritual invocation addressed to kami. As with Shinto's hymn entries, the category boundary is looser here than in traditions where mantra is a formally theorised practice.

Two Purification Formulas Standing Apart From Shinto's Own Ordinary Norito

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Shinto Mantras gathers two purification formulas, both explicitly noted, in their own descriptions, as departures from Shinto's ordinary liturgical form rather than as its typical expression.

Shinto proper works through norito, the long formal addresses to the kami that priests recite and that the atlas holds as hymns rather than mantras; what stands in this grouping instead are two short, repeated lay formulas built for purification. Harae Tamae Kiyome Tamae is used at shrine washbasins, in cold-water misogi practice and in ordinary lay devotion, and it is a modern abbreviation rather than an ancient one, a point its own description insists on rather than obscures. The Hifumi Norito is a fixed syllable sequence, beginning hi fu mi yo i mu na ya ko, that kotodama belief holds to work through the inherent power of the sounds themselves rather than through any sentence they form, which is exactly what distinguishes it in form and mechanism from the plainly semantic Harae Tamae Kiyome Tamae the same tradition also uses.

Together the two members mark out purification, harae, as the organising concept behind this small grouping, and they mark it twice over: once through ordinary meaning and once through sound treated as power in itself, a division Shinto's own theology draws.
