Element Paths gathers the three paths of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life assigned to the Mother letters of the Hebrew alphabet, each carrying one of the three classical elements the Sefer Yetzirah names as foundational: Air, Water and Fire.
Path 11 carries the letter Aleph and the element Air, joining Kether, the Crown, to Chokmah, Wisdom, along the top of the Tree. As the first of the thirty two Paths of Wisdom it stands for the first differentiation of undivided unity into force, the breath of spirit stirring at the very summit of the ascent.
Path 23 carries the letter Mem and the element Water, joining Geburah, Severity, to Hod, Splendour. Mem is the deep and formless water, and the path is one of suspension and surrender, the initiate immersed so that severity dissolves into a deeper understanding.
Path 31 carries the letter Shin and the element Fire, joining Hod, Splendour, to Malkuth, Kingdom, the lowest of the three and one of the paths leading up out of matter. Shin is the letter of spirit fire, purification and the awakening call that rouses the soul from the material world.
All three belong to the Sefer Yetzirah's original scheme of thirty two paths, a text Gershom Scholem places between the second and sixth centuries CE, surviving in recensions that do not fully agree. Their pairing with a tarot trump, The Fool, Death and Judgement, is a later addition, entering Kabbalistic use through Eliphas Levi's nineteenth century synthesis of Kabbalah and tarot; the specific attributions this atlas records descend from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn's own ceremonial scheme, fixed by the mid 1890s.
