Sign Paths gathers the twelve paths of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life assigned to the Simple letters of the Hebrew alphabet, each carrying one of the twelve zodiac signs, the largest single grouping of the thirty two paths.
The twelve run in the order the tradition assigns them. Path 15, letter Heh, Aries, joins Chokmah to Tiphareth. Path 16, letter Vav, Taurus, joins Chokmah to Chesed. Path 17, letter Zayin, Gemini, joins Binah to Tiphareth. Path 18, letter Cheth, Cancer, joins Binah to Geburah. Path 19, letter Teth, Leo, joins Chesed to Geburah. Path 20, letter Yod, Virgo, joins Chesed to Tiphareth. Path 22, letter Lamed, Libra, joins Geburah to Tiphareth. Path 24, letter Nun, Scorpio, joins Tiphareth to Netzach. Path 25, letter Samekh, Sagittarius, runs the Middle Pillar from Tiphareth to Yesod. Path 26, letter Ayin, Capricorn, joins Tiphareth to Hod. Path 28, letter Tzaddi, Aquarius, joins Netzach to Yesod. Path 29, letter Qoph, Pisces, joins Netzach to Malkuth, one of the three lowest paths leading up out of matter.
Each path's meaning in the Great Work is read from its letter and its sign together, from Aries's cardinal fire of new beginnings on Path 15 to Pisces's mutable water of the deep unconscious on Path 29.
All twelve belong to the Sefer Yetzirah's original scheme of thirty two paths, a text Gershom Scholem places between the second and sixth centuries CE. Their pairing with tarot trumps entered Kabbalistic use through Eliphas Levi's nineteenth century synthesis of Kabbalah and tarot; the attributions this atlas records descend from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn's own ceremonial scheme, fixed by the mid 1890s.
