A merit transference recitation formally directs the merit generated by an act of practice or generosity toward another being, living or deceased, rather than asking anything for the one reciting. The Dedication of Merit recorded here is a Theravada and Mahayana Buddhist form, and the distinction from petition is the direction of the request: petition asks for oneself, dedication gives away what has already been earned.
