The Sarmoung Brotherhood is named in the memoirs of Gurdjieff and later writers as an ancient Central Asian order guarding a hidden teaching, but no record independent of those accounts places it anywhere on the ground. This group is reserved for societies of that kind, orders that live in report and legend rather than in a charter, a membership roll or a building anyone can point to, distinct from the historically documented orders that make up most of this type.
