Orders organized first as an armed or paramilitary force. One is a medieval Christian military order founded to protect pilgrims in the Crusader states, the other a Nizari Ismaili order remembered in Western sources chiefly for political assassination carried out from a mountain fortress. Both operated centuries before the fraternal and esoteric orders elsewhere in this section, and neither survives today as a continuous institution.
