Societies formed around a coming age, existing to prepare for it and, when the moment seems to have arrived, to bring it on. The one society here was a Chinese Buddhist devotional network awaiting the advent of Maitreya, the future Buddha, and that expectation drove the rebellions it is remembered for rather than the other way round.
