Newton's Choice, Not a Natural Given

Attributed to "Newtonian optics: the seven colour spectrum": "the seven colour rainbow is a choice, not an observation. Newton first described five bands and settled on seven by adding orange and indigo," matching the seven notes of a musical scale rather than any distinction his own eye had drawn. The claim is recorded as a dated origin period on each of the seven colors, and it is the choice of seven, not the colors themselves, that the note contests.

Seven Colors, One Argument About the Seventh
