Red is the longest visible wavelength of light, roughly 620 to 750 nanometers, and the most active color of the spectrum. In the astrological color scale it is scarlet, the King-scale color of Aries, the cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars, and it carries that planet heat, drive, and vitality. Symbolically red is blood and fire, life force and will, courage, passion, anger, and war, the color that most quickens the pulse and draws the eye. Cultures read it as luck and celebration in China, as danger and warning in the modern West, and as love and sacrifice throughout. In the chakra system its warm register belongs to the lower, grounding energies of survival and desire.

Origin Period
1666 to 1704 2Tradition: Newtonian optics: the seven-colour spectrum
Isaac Newton's own account in Opticks (London, 1704) describes how he arrived at seven spectral colours: his earliest prism observations distinguished five bands, and he settled on seven, adding orange and indigo, by explicit analogy with the seven intervals of the musical octave, a numerological choice rather than a further optical finding. Reading Newton's own text against the continuous gradient a prism actually produces shows the seven-fold division is an interpretive choice about where to draw lines in that continuum, not a count nature supplies; observers from Newton's own time onward have disputed whether indigo is visually distinct from blue and violet at all. Any scheme in this atlas that treats seven colours as given inherits Newton's seventeenth-century analogy to the octave rather than an independent observation.

Red Across the Traditions

Red is the colour of blood and fire, and most of its symbolism follows from those two associations rather than from any single doctrine. Because it signals blood, it stands for both life and violence: for vitality, fertility and love on one side, and for war, danger and sacrifice on the other. In the Roman world red was the colour of Mars and of the general's triumph; in the Christian liturgical calendar red marks Pentecost and the feasts of martyrs, tying it to the Holy Spirit's fire and to blood shed in witness.

In China red is the colour of luck, joy and celebration, worn at weddings and given at the new year, an emphatically positive value that contrasts with the Western sense of warning. In Hindu practice red is auspicious and bridal, associated with the goddess and with the married state through the vermilion sindoor. In the modern chakra scheme red is placed at the root centre, the base of the spine, a twentieth-century Western assignment. Its use for prohibition and alarm is a modern convention built on the same visibility that made it the colour of danger everywhere.

How Red Was Made

Red is the oldest pigment in human use and the easiest to obtain, and both facts shaped everything that was later said about it.

The base is ochre, iron oxide, which occurs as coloured earth and needs only grinding. Ochre-processing equipment has been recovered from Blombos Cave in South Africa in deposits around a hundred thousand years old, and ochre appears in burials, on rock surfaces and on bodies across every inhabited continent. Nothing else in the palette is that available, and a colour that any community can make is a colour that every community can use.

Above ochre sat the expensive reds. Cinnabar, mercury sulphide, ground to the pigment called vermilion, gave a brilliance ochre cannot and carried the hazards of a mercury ore. Red lead, minium, was cheaper and darkened over time. For textiles the choices were madder, a root dye known across Eurasia, and the insect reds, kermes and later cochineal, which cost many times more.

That range is why red does not carry one meaning. The ochre red of a burial and the vermilion of a manuscript initial and the kermes scarlet of a cardinal's robe are the same hue reached at wildly different cost, and the social weight of the colour in any given context depends on which one is meant. A tradition that reserves red for the powerful is talking about the dyes. A tradition that puts red on everyone is talking about the earth.

Cross-Tradition Connections

Associated With

Fire, Elements

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn assigns red to Fire in its elemental colouring, used for the fire wand, the fire triangle and the invoking pentagram of fire. The attribution is a nineteenth century ritual convention of that order, not an inheritance from classical sources.

Fire, Tattvas

In the tattva symbols used for scrying in the Golden Dawn, Tejas, fire, is drawn as a red upward triangle. This coloured geometric set reached Western ritual practice through the Theosophical current of the late nineteenth century and is not the form the tattvas take in Indian philosophical texts.

Red is the vestment colour of Good Friday in the Roman Rite, and of Palm Sunday, the two days of the Lord's Passion. Black was widely used for Good Friday before the reform of the missal and is still met with in older usage.

Red is the vestment colour of Pentecost in the Roman Rite, where it reads as the fire of the Spirit. The same colour serves for martyrs, where it reads as blood: one colour carrying two distinct meanings inside one rite.

Rubedo, the reddening, is the final colour change of the Great Work and the sign of the completed stone. Read as a chemical claim it describes a real observed change of colour, which is part of why the sequence survived so long as a technical vocabulary.

South, Directions

In Chinese five-phase theory red is the colour of the Fire phase, and Fire governs the south, summer and the noon of the day. The scheme is correlative rather than decorative: colour, direction, season, organ and taste are read together, so red carries the south rather than merely sitting beside it.

China, Regions

In Chinese custom red is the colour of celebration and good fortune, used for wedding dress, New Year couplets and the money envelope. This is a separate strand from the five-phase attribution of red to Fire and the south, and the two are often run together in Western summaries.

Namesake Of

Named in 1861 by Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff from the Latin rubidus, deepest red, for the two red lines by which their new spectroscope picked it out. An etymological link only, not a claim that the element carries the associations of the colour.

Related To

Infrared, Colors

Herschel found in 1800 that a thermometer placed beyond the red end of a solar spectrum rose higher than one inside it, the first evidence of radiation past the visible. Infrared is defined by that position relative to red rather than by any appearance.
