The receiver is the vessel positioned at the outlet of a still, whether an alembic's spout, a retort's bent neck, or a worm's open end, to catch and hold the distillate as it condenses and drips out of the apparatus. It is the simplest piece of equipment in the whole distillation chain, doing no chemical or physical work of its own beyond holding still and staying in place under the drip, but a distillation cannot be run without one, and period illustrations of stills consistently show a receiver waiting beneath the spout. Because it held the finished product rather than anything still being processed, the receiver was often the one piece of a distillation setup made from finer or more decorative material than the rest, sometimes marked with graduations to measure the volume collected. The term survives unchanged in modern chemistry, where a "receiving flask" still means exactly what a receiver meant on an alchemist's bench, the vessel that catches what the apparatus produces.

How the Receiver Works
A receiver's function is almost entirely passive: it is simply the vessel positioned to catch whatever liquid drips or flows out of a still's outlet, whether that outlet is an alembic's curved spout, a retort's downward-bent neck, or the open end of a coiled worm condenser. Its placement, not its construction, is what makes it work: an operator set the receiver directly beneath the point where condensed distillate emerged, close enough that no liquid was lost to splashing or missed drips but clear enough of the heat source that the collected liquid was never at risk of being reheated or evaporating back out.
For a long or unattended distillation, the receiver's capacity mattered as much as its placement, since a vessel too small would overflow before the operation finished, and some setups used a train of several receivers that could be swapped in sequence, letting an operator collect different fractions of a distillation separately as they came over. A stopper or loose cover was sometimes fitted to the receiver's mouth to slow evaporation of a volatile distillate once it had been collected, though it had to allow vapor pressure to equalize rather than sealing the vessel airtight while liquid was still actively dripping in.
History and What It Became
The receiver has been part of the distillation apparatus for as long as the alembic and retort themselves, since no still can function without somewhere for its output to go, and period illustrations of alchemical and early chemical laboratories consistently show a receiver waiting beneath a still's spout or a worm's outlet. Its passive role meant it changed less over the centuries than almost any other vessel in this category: a receiver from a medieval alchemical workshop and a receiving flask on a nineteenth-century chemistry bench serve the identical function, catching and holding what the rest of the apparatus produces.
Because it held finished product rather than material still being worked, the receiver was sometimes given more attention as an object than its purely functional role required, occasionally graduated with volume markings or made from finer glass than the rougher vessels doing the actual heating and distilling. The term crossed into modern chemistry essentially unchanged: a "receiving flask" in a present-day distillation setup is the direct linguistic and functional descendant of the alchemist's receiver, still doing precisely the same job at the far end of precisely the same kind of apparatus.
