Origin from -15,279

The kangaroo is an ancestral being across much of Aboriginal Australia, with kangaroo Dreaming tracks running through country and kangaroo ceremonies attached to particular places and particular groups. It is among the oldest subjects in Australian rock art, including the x-ray style of western Arnhem Land, which shows the internal organs of the animal as well as its outline. Its meaning is local rather than general: what a kangaroo is depends on which country and which group is speaking, and no single reading covers the continent. It is at the same time an everyday food animal and a being whose story a person may be responsible for.

Dreaming Tracks and the X-Ray Style

A kangaroo Dreaming is not a story about a kangaroo. It is a track: a path across actual country marking where an ancestral being travelled, what it did at each place, and which sites and songs and designs belong to that passage. The people whose country the track crosses hold the relevant portion, and holding it carries obligations to perform and to teach.

That is why the kangaroo means different things in different places, and why a general reading is not available. In one country the ancestral kangaroo made a waterhole; in another it fought and the marks are in the rock. The animal is the same; the account is local and is owned.

The x-ray style of western Arnhem Land shows the kangaroo from outside and inside at once, with the spine, the heart and the alimentary tract drawn within the outline. It is usually explained as knowledge of the animal as butcher and hunter know it, though the paintings are not butchery diagrams and the internal elements are stylised rather than anatomical.

Kangaroo images are among the oldest datable subjects in Australian rock art. A painting in the Kimberley was dated in 2021, using mud wasp nests above and below the pigment, to roughly 17,300 years old, making it the oldest known in situ rock painting on the continent. It is a kangaroo.

What the Animal Is For

The kangaroo is the largest game animal in most of Australia, and the hunting of it is governed rather than free. Distribution rules assign parts of the carcass to particular relatives by kinship position, so that a successful hunter often keeps the least of it. Those rules are not politeness; they are how the obligations of a kin system are made visible and enforced.

Every part is used. Sinew for binding and for the ends of spear-throwers, hide for water carriers and for warmth, bone for points, teeth for engraving tools, and the tail as the preferred cut. Cooking in a ground oven, the animal placed whole in a pit with hot stones and covered, is documented across a wide area.

Some groups have restrictions on eating the animal whose Dreaming a person holds, and where those apply they are specific to the person and the country rather than general. This is the sort of detail that flattens badly in summary, and the atlas records that the rules exist rather than reproducing a version of them.

Since colonisation the animal has also become a commercial and a political object: a harvested species, a national emblem, and an argument about land management, in which Aboriginal fire and hunting practice is now recognised as having shaped the populations that Europeans found and assumed were natural.

Cross-Tradition Connections

Disciplines That Use This

One of the animal spirits gathered under this discipline. Where a tradition restricts this material, the restriction is recorded on the tradition itself rather than repeated for each animal.
